Dressing for the office can be difficult enough without having to stress out about conforming to the unwritten rules of hosiery. Fortunately, there are ways to take the guesswork out of business attire so that you can get on with more important things—like work!
The Golden Rule
Historically speaking, sheer nylons in a lighter color are what you would want to wear in an office or other business setting. It’s a formal look that pulls your outfit together without drawing attention to itself in context. These days, however, the level of formality in the office, as well as in daily life, has been greatly diminished. Few people dress for work as if they were headed to Sterling Cooper on the set of Mad Men. Sheer nylons are as likely to get you labeled as boring as they are appropriate. That’s good news for women who love color and pattern. Hot trends in brightly colored opaque tights have left many of us craving shockingly saturated legs.
Breaking the Rules
Don’t break out the magenta just yet however. First, you’ll need to conduct a little observation. Ideally, you already know the details of the office dress code and the general climate of your coworkers’ attire. In that case, you can match your outfit’s level of formality, including hosiery, to those general guidelines. Keep in mind of course that there are some more formal tasks and occasions to be wary of. Don’t plan on wearing mustard tights to an interview, for example, or to court. Still, if business casual is the order of the day then you can surely get by with a few daring hosiery choices balanced out by otherwise conservative ensembles. Just try to treat your wolford tights and nylons as you would any other outfit accessory. If the atmosphere leans towards the conservative—or you have someone to impress—then plan to wear sheer nylons. Save the opaque and patterned tights for you own time.
